Lipid Condition and Survival in Shrimp ( Pandalus borealis ) Larvae

Croups of shrimp (Pandalus boreal is) larvae were reared under dif ferent food concentrat ions and types to assess changes in condit ion and survival during development. As expected, rate of growth (wet weight) was highei for la rvae fed on 300 Ar temia naup l i i .L r (San Franc isco s t ra in : 0 .0528 mg 'd ' ; Canada s t ra in : 0 .0355 mg 'd ' ) compared w i th those reared a t 150 naup l i i ' L ' (San Franc isco s t ra in : 0 .0211 mg 'd ' ) , la rvaefed /sochrys is ce l l s only, and no food. Shrimp larvae reared without food and larvae fed on /sochrysis cel ls showed a decreasing t rend in wet we igh t dur ing deve lopment and d id no t surv ive beyond s tage l l . The t r iacy lg lycero l (TAC) conten t o f la rvae accumula ted rap id ly dur ing the in i t ia l phase o f in te rmou l t fo l lowed by a dec l ine to a min imum co in c ident w i th ecdys is . H igh mor ta l i t y (average 2 .2 ' / . ' d ' ) occur red dur ing the f i rs t phases o f deve lopment ( f i r s t 25 d) fo r a l l ra t ions . D i f fe rences among exper iments in the magn i tude o f the mor ta l i t y ( f rom 0 .86 to 4 .66%'d r ) at the f irst moult were related to the proport ion of larvae in poor TAC condit ion. The results are consistent with the concept that the TAC condit ion index can be used to forecast, on a relat ive basis, dif ferential survival among larva l g roups .
